Open genuine appreciation in public good or bad?

I am a small time manager. I have a young colleague, answerable to me, who is doing very hard work, is proactive. I praise him openly in the presence of all. My supervisor feels I am pampering him and in a job market that is not in favor of employers we may risk loosing him, he may demand exhorbitant compensation etc. Your opinion?

Maybe you need to keep your praise down a bit. Too much could be a bad thing. I would start just going up to your colleague and tell only him. that you think he is doing well, but not all the time. As far as the compensation, if he is invaluable to the company, he should be paid for it. Losing him can happen anyway if word gets out. I would just back off for awhile and let them see him as you do.

You are doing the right thing. Employees, especially young people, really need positive reinforcement. I respectfully disagree with your supervisor. Acknowledging positive behaviors in the workplace is anything BUT pampering.
